Managersí Minute Book 1864-1903

(General Introduction - Opens in a new window)

- 1869 -

Below we present the record of meetings the Managers held during 1869.  Through the year there were various matters of a practical nature regarding the maintenance of the school building and the house that needed to be considered.  That the Managers decided to place wire grating over the school windows suggests that these had been broken on several occasions. We have been unable to identify the issue that exercised the Managersí minds caused by discussions of the Committee of Council on Education (3rd April). However, as this was the year immediately preceding the 1870 Education Act, which was to have a profound impact on state education, it may have been linked to the impending changes. Discussions of Rosa Hillís apprentice (2nd July) may suggest that consideration was being given to offering her a place as Pupil-Teacher. Rosa had been working in the school as a Monitor since 1866, apparently as a series of six-month appointments. This appears never to have happened, rather Rosa resigned her position as Monitor (1870), was encouraged to continue, which she did until 1871 when it seems she finally left, the Managers presenting her with £5 as an expression of their gratitude for her work at the school.  During the summer the annual government inspection took place as normal and it would appear that, although not formally stated as such, as a consequence Mr Lavis became the first of a number of Masters at the school to be dismissed (or encourage to leave, 4th August). Since no replacement was put in place until 1871 it may be that a compromise between the Managers and Mr Lavis was found to avoid the school being left without a Master.
