An Infants' Room - Building and Finance

- 1876 -

The Manager's minutes for December 1875 commissioned the extension of the school building.  From the Parish Magazine we are able to identify that this was to accommodate a discrete Infant class at the Ruislip School. Matthew Arnold, as Inspector of Schools, had argued in his report to the Committee of Council on Education as early as 1852 that schools needed to have separate provision for younger children, not that they should be included in the same classes as pupils as old as 13 years (Matthew Arnold, Reports on Elementary Schools 1852-1882, New Edition, London (1908), p.14).  The Parish Magazine during 1876 provided the following comments on the extension, including a breakdown of the finances.

Comment in the introduction:-

“the Day School also has made rapid strides, so much so, that on the recommendation of H.M. Inspector, the Managers have arranged to increase the accommodation; for which purpose another room is to be built exclusively for infants, and it is hoped that this addition will be finished by Easter-tide.”

*** The New Infant School-Room will be Open on Monday, the 5th of June.

July, 1876

The new Infant School-room is now open, as is found to a great convenience to the teaching staff, and an improvement, in every way, on the old Class-room.  The total cost of the building, together with some necessary alterations, amounts to £170 9s. 10d., and the amount collected £140 16s. 0d., leaving a balance of £29 13s. 10d. to be paid from the reserved fund.
