1981 ~ Class 1

BWI, in the 1980s, was a 'one and a half form' entry school - taking in 54/55 pupils each year.  While the school was able to support two classes for each year group through the Infants, by the time they entered the Juniors the class size rose to an average of 35 and configured as follows:

Class 6 - two-thirds of the Year 3 pupils (youngest)
Class 5 - one-third of the Year 3 pupils (oldest)
and one-third of the Year 4 pupils (youngest)
Class 4 - two-thirds of the Year 4 pupils (oldest)
Class 3 - two-thirds of the Year 5 pupils (youngest)
Class 2 - one-third of the Year 5 pupils (oldest)
and one-third of the Year 6 pupils (youngest)
Class 1 - two-thirds of the Year 6 pupils (oldest)

In 1980-81, however, the number of pupils in Year 6 was only 46.  If the usual arrangement was followed this would have resulted in only a small number of pupils in Class 2 and this was felt to disadvantage those children.  It was decided, therefore, to place all the children in the same class - a class of 46.  Mrs Pocklington was asked to take this class.  However Mrs Pocklington was unable to complete the year due to both her and her husband relocating to Norfolk. Just before she left at Easter 1981 she took this picture of her class (with a few missing!)
